Install and explore HANA on your laptop - HANA Express Edition

SAP has been providing the developer edition for developers/admins and ISVs to learn HANA. Although it is free, you needed to pay the service fee to AWS or Microsoft Azure.

SAP HANA Express Edition - install HANA for free on your laptop

Now SAP has released a version of SAP HANA - SAP HANA Express Edition - that you can install on personal computer, small server or in the cloud. You can use the applications that you develop on this edition both for production and non-production scenarios, unlike Developer Edition which was available for non-productive use alone.

The express edition, however, restricts access to some of  the feature such as smart data streaming, system replication, remote data synchronization and smart data integration.

The express edition is free for use up to 32 GB of memory, and is extensible to 128 GB by paying license fee. It is supported on Windows (SAP ships it with a VM), Mac OS X (VM again) and Linux. You can also run express edition on small Intel servers running on SLES or RHEL. When using on cloud, you have pay the service fee to the cloud service providers.

The software come with two packages
  • Express edition server package
  • Tool package, including SAP Web IDE, and administration tools such as SAP HANA Cockpit

Following are the features available on Express Edition:
  • Core data services (restricted list)
  • Advanced data processing services
  • Smart data access

The following features are not available on Express Edition:
  • Data warehousing foundation
  • High availability
  • Disaster recovery
  • System replication
  • Multihosting and scaleout
  • Dynamic tiering
  • Remote data synchronization
  • SAP Solution Manager
  • Smart data integration
  • Smart data quality
  • Smart data streaming

Fixing Inconsistent Table - Table activation fails due to inconsistency between DD and DB

If you find a table to be available on the database, but not active in ABAP dictionary, try calling SE14 as DDIC user, enter the table name and choose Table > Reconstruct, Execute. If this method fails follow these steps: Call transaction code SE37 and execute the function module  DD_TABL_ACTM with single test On the next screen, do not change any other field except the following and set them as shown below: MODE: 12 NTAB_PUTSTATE: N TABNAME: <enter the correct table name> Click on Execute The export parameter ACT_RESULT should show 0. To verify if the inconsistency is fixed, call transaction SE14 > Extras > Database Object > Check and  SE14 > Extras > Runtime object > Check.

301 Redirect Using SAP Web Dispatcher

301 redirects are typically used to redirect accesses that include www to non-www or vice-versa. Example, when you call http://blogger.com, the call is redirected to www.blogger.com. An end-user may prefer to call a URL in any manner. You must ensure that all these calls are redirected to relevant URLs with content.
